HTC Early Childhood Centers
School Board Report November 23, 2009
Melissa Pieper, Director

Faith Development-
1. The kindergarten will be attending mass with the West Point kindergarten on Tuesday November 24th.

Instructional Leadership/Curriculum-
1. The emergency plans for all buildings have been completed.  AEA is in the process of printing one for each classroom.  The purpose of the plans is so that teachers have information readily available to them in the event of an emergency.
2. The ECC teachers now have their websites online.  They are excited about the website as a way to communicate and share their classroom with parents.

Public Relations/Marketing & Development-
1. I made cards to send to newly baptized children as well as cards to send to the children who were baptized and we did not send anything to.  Those went out in the mail and hopefully they will generate some enrollment. We have had several phone calls regarding the cards and all have put their children on the list for preschool next year.
2. Along with preschool enrollment we have at least 7 children whose parents have turned in registration forms stating that they will be enrolling their child in Holy Trinity kindergarten.  Some will attend in Fort Madison and others will be attending in West Point.

Building Updates-
1. I talked with our DHS representative and unfortunately we have to go through DHS for our background checks.  However, the implementation of fees for these services has been suspended for the time being.  We will not have to pay these fees until the time when they determine that they wish to implement.
2. We completed our cookie dough sales.  Teresa said that the preliminary numbers show that we did just as well this year as we did last year.  Great job to our students!!!!
Fort Madison:
1. The representative from the Health Department visited us on 10/27 to check our lunch program.  She observed how food was distributed to the children and made sure that health regulations were being followed.  She did not observe any violations.
2. We have not had any problems with the boiler in Fort Madison and hope to keep it that way.  John has been coming regularly to check to make sure it is running properly.
St. Paul:
1. We received our QRS rating for the St. Paul site.  We were only at a level 2 and have now reached a level 4.  Both sites now have a level 4 rating.

We are always in need of substitutes for the ECC centers.  If you know of anyone who has their 1st aid and CPR certifications and has experience working with children, please have them call me at the ECC centers.

HTC Elementary School Board Report

November 23, 2009
Sara Mohrfeld

Faith Development
We will be having a Thanksgiving Mass with students from each grade helping on Tuesday, November 24th at 8:45. Students are not attending Mass with the residents at the West Point Care Center during the cold/flu season.  Once the Care Center thinks it is safe for the students to be around the residents, we will resume attending Mass on the first and third Thursdays of each month. After Thanksgiving break, we will be having our weekly Advent ceremony each Monday during Advent.  Students will also be doing activities in the classrooms to prepare for the coming of Jesus during this Advent season. We will be participating in communal penance Tuesday, December 1st. Don’t forget to keep an eye for our HTC Elementary page in the Catholic Messenger; the teachers and Shelley Sheerin did a fantastic job! Students took part in a Christmas card coloring contest through the Catholic Messenger; if they are chosen they will be featured in the Catholic Messenger in December.
Instructional Leadership
ITBS tests are finished and sent in for scoring.  Teachers are continuing their hard work implementing the Just Ask science, ESC math, ELY science, and many other initiatives. We are continue to learn about the promethean boards and the wonderful asset they are to our classrooms!  Even the teachers who don’t currently have one in their rooms are learning a thing or two!

Public Relations/Student Involvement
Students in grades 4-6 that are involved in the YC (Youth Crusader) Choir, are busy working on material to sing at an upcoming Christmas party in early December.  They will also be making appearances at our local parishes in the New Year. We finished our penny drive to help the local United Way.  Students brought in pennies and the winning class that won the pizza party was Miss Schumaker’s 1st grade and the 5th grade!  Way to go!. We have been lucky to been given a recycling trailer from the GRRWA.  We applied for this trailer through a grant and were happy to receive it!  Students in grade 6 help to gather each room’s recycling each week to load into the trailer.
Student Activities
Students in grades 4-6 are working/practicing for our Christmas Concert Sending out Love which will be Wednesday, December 16th.  Students in grade K-3 are also working hard practicing for the concert; we can’t wait to hear all of the hard work!
The 5th/6th grade boys and girls will begin basketball the first week of December. Students in grades 5th/6th who participate in band will join the Jr/Sr High to hold a concert in West Point on Wednesday, December 9th at 7:00. Building
I am still looking into purchasing a bench and trash can for our playground with money from a memorial.

Faith Development
1.
The pastors and Mrs. Jacobs and I have met to clarify questions about Confirmation requirements and parish/school responsibilities.
2.  HTC students will enjoy a Thanksgiving Mass on Tuesday.
3.  The service projects which provided new winter coats/hats/mittens for area youngsters and food items for the local food pantry were very successful.  There will be coverage in local papers, tv stations, and the Catholic Messenger
4.  Advent Service projects will include mailings to our service men and women, please forward any addresses to HTC.
5.  Communal Penance services for HTC students will be December 1.
6.  There is a bloodmobile on Wednesday, December 3 at the 7-12 bldg.
ProfessionalDevelopment
1.  The teachers received different types of technology training at the November 18 early out, either with the promethean boards with Natalie Ulloa or with Donna McVeigh concerning “blogs” on the teacher websites.
2.   7 - 12 Teachers will continue to work with the on-line grading so they are comfortable with the process for the second semester.
3.  Gail Kunch attended a 2 day in-service at the AEA for classroom applications for Venier LabQuest hand-helds for the science department. This equipment was part of the science equipment we have obtained through various programs/grants and is recommended for teaching science concepts in the Iowa CORE. InstructionalLeadership
1.  I have been assigned by the Iowa Dept. of Ed. to the school certification visit team for Bishop Hayes grade school in Muscatine in Feb.
2.  I am in the process of formal observations of the certified teaching staff. I have been in the elementary building and will be in the ECC next week. I plan to observe 7-12 in December.  I concentrated on the math sequence while at the elementary level.  I plan to also observe the science and reading sequence at the elementary.  The high school visits will be according to area of expertise.  Donna McVeigh will have input on technology integration in the classroom and professional development initiatives.
Diocesan, State, and Federal Issues
The State of Iowa is scheduling 10% cuts in State programs. . . this impacts Iowa schools.  We are staying apprised of any developments and will act accordingly.
Other information
1.  Our on-going shared sports paperwork is due at this time of
year.  We will again be sharing football, wrestling and girls soccer with Ft. Madison Public for the 2010 - 2011 school year.
2.  I have asked Donna McVeigh to develop job descriptions for the secretarial staff.  These job descriptions will lead to evaluation instruments.
3.   We need to decide on how we want to do the December meetings, we could do a work session on December 7 (the first Monday) and a short Business meeting/Christmas get-together on December 14 or Dec. 21.  The other administrators and I are going to do a section of the board policy updates at meetings during the month and then send corrections/updates to be approved at the various board meetings throughout the remainder of this school year.  In this way we should be able to have an updated policy book for the school accreditation visit next year.
I am going to post the position of guidance counselor for HTC K - 12 for the 2010 - 2011 school year.   This can be a full-time or part-time position depending upon the candidate.  The person with counseling certification has resigned at the end of the current school year.  Mr. Wilkerson has indicated that he would like to continue to do Cross Country and junior high track.  No other employee of HTC has the counselor endorsement.
