team will travel to Notre Dame.  Game will begin at 5:00 PM  Team will leave at 3:50 PM
Thursday, Oct. 18th  -

- Cross Country State Qualifier
at Iowa City.  Event will take place at the Iowa City Kickers Soccer Park.  (Golf course address is 4400 Soccer Park Rd., Iowa City, Iowa  52240) Team will leave at 12:30 PM.  Please dismiss the team following lunch.  Admission is $5 per car.  HTC Varsity boys will run at 4:30 PM

Regional Volleyball

Grade 1 Academics

Religion

Units include: WE BELIEVE;God Loves Us, He is our Creator, Holy Spirit is our Helper, Jesus is the Son of God, Mary is the Mother of God, Jesus Gave Us the Church.

WE CELEBRATE THE LITURGICAL SEASONS; Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, The Season of Easter.

We also listen to Scripture Stories, and participate in Weekly Masses. We start and end our day with prayer.

Math

We are starting our 4th year using Everyday Mathematics and use the Kathy Richardson Assessment. Advanced students use challenge math packets to expose them to a deeper understanding of the 1st grade secure goals.

The Everyday Mathematics series emphasizes the skills and concepts of Numeration: counting, reading & writing numbers, investigating place value of whole numbers, exploring fractions and money.

Operations and Computations: Learning addition and subtraction facts, fact families,

Data and Chance: Collecting, organizing and displaying data using tables, charts, and graphs, exploring concepts of chance.

Geometry: Exploring 2 and 3 dimensional shapes.

Measurement and Reference Frames: Using tools to measure length, capacity, and weight: using clocks, calendars, timelines, thermometers, and ordinal numbers.

Patterns, Functions, and Algebra: Exploring attributes, patterns, sequences, relations, and functions: finding missing numbers and rules in Frames and Arrows and What's My Rule? problems, studying properties of operations.

We also emphasize problem solving through the Every Student Counts Team with the Great Prairie Area Agency.

Social Studies

Units include Rules, Community, Our Earth & resources, Our Country, Our World. We also use the Weekly Reader in our classroom and take field trips to the Fire Station and the Hospital.

Reading

The Language Arts series, Harcourt Trophies, is used in First Grade. Along with the Basal Reader, we use the Star Reading and Accelerated Reading program on the computer. Phonemic strategies are learned to become better readers. Spelling is introduced and correlates with the stories in Reading. Daily journal writing encourages sentence structure. The D'nealian method of handwriting is used. The students are expected to read at home each night and a record is kept on their Reading Envelope.

Science

With two new Science Kits received through a Just Ask Science grant, we study Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science and the Human Body. The lessons are taught using and Inquiry techniques. Field trips are taken to Wilson Lake and Merschman Seed.
