Grade 5 Academics

This year we will be living the theme "Jesus Is On Our Team". We participate in Weekly School Masses and take turns at being servers, lectors, and gift bearers. We also participate in the Advent and Lenten activites. We start our day and end with a prayer. We will focus on the parts of the Bible, the Sacraments and the Ten Commandments.

We will be completing two hands-on "Just Ask" Science kits. Students will be using science inquiry skills as we work in a Floating and Sinking science kit and a Land and Water kit.

Our main emphasis is to build student vocabulary, reading fluency, and comprehension skills. We participate in the Book-It Program, October through March and we participate in the Buzz Reading Program. Students will have set AR reading goals each quarter and will work hard to achieve their goal every quarter.

Students will continue working in the Fifth Grade Everyday Math book extending what they learned in fourth grade about number theory, estimation, geometry, division, fractions, decimals, percents, exponents, and negative numbers. The ALEKS program provides weekly practice and remediation of fifth grade math objectives.

Social Studies

Students will cover United States History mainly covering Native Americans to Civil Wars. We will have a field trip to the Civil War Reenactment in Keokuk. Our students participate in the National Geographic Society Geography Bee in December/January.

Language Arts

Besides extending our knowledge of sentences, nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, and adverbs, we will be writing a persuasive and explanatory writing. Students reinforce language skills through daily language practice sheets. Weekly spelling units and a Catholic writing handbook are two other components of our program. Our students participate in the Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee in February.
